Ring! Ring! What time is it? Two in the morning! Who the hell calls at 2 AM?!

“Stay quiet. Get in the closet. Don’t scream.”

“What? Who is this?”

“You have five seconds.” Click.

Bang! I spring from my bed and slink into the closet pressing my eye to the crack. I’m breathing too loud. God, please don’t let him see me!

Bang! In the flash I see my husband’s wide eyes filled with primal fear. I squeeze my eyes shut. Don’t scream. Don’t scream.

Bang! He’s bleeding. Bang! Gun powder chokes my throat. Bang! I glimpse the intruder’s face. The black soulless eyes. The sharp jaw. My neighbor.

His footsteps approach closer, closer. I squeeze my eyes shut. Closer. I hold my breath. Oh God, he sees me! But the footsteps begin to fade. I can breathe again. As I reach for the door knob cold hands clamp over my mouth and grab my arms from behind. Hot breath tickles my ear. My blood freezes. A blade chills my throat. “You didn’t think I’d let you get away that easy? Bitch.”
